Seities Studio’s The Photographic Blue comes to Window Galleries in Arts Commons this December. Showcasing the diversity of Cyanotype photography, the exhibit brings different views about female identity together with the aesthetics of traditional photography.

Featured in the exhibit are works from Jaime Erin Johnson, Emma Powell, and Juilee Pryorinternationally recognized as artists in cyanotype photography. The medium of Cyanotype photography, also called blue print, uses a traditional photographic process in which an iron-based chemical emulsion is applied directly to paper by hand, and exposed using a transparent negative to ultra-violet light. This creates a blue print effect. “The photographic blue takes a contemporary look at an old technique, with focus on the diversity of the cyanotype process, and it’s acknowledgments to feminine identity, body and spirit,” says Sanja Lukac, Executive Director of Seities Studio. “Parallel to the spirit of Anna Atkins (1799-1871) who pioneered the cyanotype process as an art form in 1843 with her illustrative botanical works, and as the first female photographer to utilize the cyanotype process in her practice.”
